What You Need to Know About:

Insurance, FSAs, HSAs, and more

Health Savings Account (H.S.A.)
www.irs.gov/publications/p969

A high deductible health plan may pro-vide preventive care benefits without a deductible or with a deductible below the minimum annual deductible. Preventive care includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  1. Periodic health evaluations including tests and diagnostic procedures ordered in connections with routine exams, such as annual physicals.
  2. Routine prenatal and well-child care.
  3. Obesity weight-loss programs.
  4. Screening services include the following:

  • A. Metabolic, nutritionals and en-docrine conditions
  • B. Pediatric conditions
  • C. Heart and vascular conditions

Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.)
www.irs.gov/publications/p969

Generally distributions from the health FSA must be paid only to reimburse you for qualified medical expenses you incurred during the period of coverage. Qualified Medical Expenses are those specified in the plan that would generally qualify for the medical and dental expenses deduction. These are explained in Publication 502, Medical and Dental Expenses.

Listed are a few of the common unreimbursed medical expenses that may be eligible under an H.S.A. or F.S.A. plan.

Naturopathic Healers

Possibly covered, non-traditional healing treatments provided by professionals may be eligible if provided to treat a specific medical condition

Dietary and Nutritional Supplements

You cannot include dietary supplements, nutritional supplements, vitamins, or herbal supplements unless they are recommended by a medical practitioner as treatment for a specific medical condition diagnosed by a physician.

Massage Therapy

May be covered if prescribed by a doctor to treat a medical condition related to trauma or injury

For more information, contact the IRS Website at www.irs.gov.

Lab Fees

An F.S.A. is acceptable as payment for some of our participating laboratories.

Weight Loss Program

You may be able to include medical expense amounts you pay to lose weight if it is a treatment for a specific disease diagnosed by a physician (such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease.) This includes fees you pay for membership in a weight reduction group and attendance at periodic meetings. You cannot include membership dues in a gym, health club, or spa as medical expenses, but you can include separate fees charged there for weight loss activities.

You cannot include the cost of diet food or beverages as medical expenses because the diet food and beverages substitute for what is normally consumed to satisfy nutritional needs. You can include the cost of special food as medical expenses only if:

  1. The food does not satisfy normal nutritional needs.
  2. The food alleviates or treats an illness.
  3. The need for the food is substantiated by a physician.
